Author, Speaker, Consultant: Ideas on Creating Profitable Customer Relationships

The Bridge to the Best Idea

Written on June 29, 2010 – 12:01 am | by Steve Yastrow |

Of all of the things you’ll say today, how many are the most perfect thing you could say?

If you’re mortal, the answer is probably none.  Ok … if you’re having a great day, maybe a few.  There are a near-infinite number of possible things that can be said in a conversation, so it’s highly unlikely you, or anyone else, will say the best thing.

But, even though every idea is not the best idea, every idea can be a bridge to the best idea.  This concept is inspired by a line from Tom Yorton, CEO of Second City Communications, talking about how stage improvisation techniques can apply to business.  Tom said, “While each actor’s in-the-moment response may not be the best idea, it is always at least a bridge to the best idea.”

Today’s newsletter, The Bridge to the Best Idea, takes Tom’s concept and focuses on how it applies to sales. Please leave some comments below … even if they aren’t the best comments you could possibly make!

I enjoyed playing with this idea (and remembering some hilarious improv). This can be found right at the heart of innovation and entrepreneurship; like Tom Peter’s says, ‘innovation is trying more things than the other guy’. When you try, you probably won’t find the idea you were searching for but I bet you get closer!

Booking my next trip to the comedy club. :)

About Steve Yastrow and Yastrow & Company

In addition to writing, I spend most of my work time helping companies unleash their potential by creating better connections with their customers. This happens through my speaking events and through Yastrow & Company consulting engagements, where my team and I help companies figure out who they intend to be in the future, and then engage the entire company in creating that future through strong "We" customer relationships.

Before starting Yastrow & Company in the mid-90s I was vice-president of resort marketing for Hyatt Hotels. My experiences in the hotel business showed me clearly that most marketing doesn’t happen in the marketing department. Customers are paying attention to all interactions with a company, not just the promises made in traditional "marketing communications."
