Author, Speaker, Consultant: Ideas on Creating Profitable Customer Relationships

New Book, New Blog

Written on February 1, 2008 – 4:52 pm | by Steve Yastrow |

Over the past few years, I’ve been writing my new book, We: The Ideal Customer Relationship, and blogging as a contributor on tompeters.com. We arrives in retail stores this week, and to coincide with the book launch I’m starting this blog. My work on customer relationships, combined with new ideas on marketing, branding and unleashing the latent profit in businesses, has produced ideas to share. I will still contribute to tompeters.com, where the community is always full of interesting comments and debate.

Also, I will bring my newsletter out of its dormant state, and it will begin a semi-monthly publication in mid-February. The newsletter articles will be a bit more in-depth than the blog posts, and not as frequent, focusing on different topics at a given time.

New book, new blog, fundamentally human idea.

How do you compete against the unbelievable volume of media messages, products, and competitors? How are we going to compete against China?

I don’t know how to compete against China but know where to begin to compete against everything else.
When I can engage my customer, she gives me the one thing every advertisement dreams for – her complete attention.
Who can compete with me in that moment?

WE is the natural reaction to years of the “new economy” tech bubble where everything was going to be sold through flying electrons, isolating the customer from the seller. This model was the evolution of the old idea of making millions through assembly lines and efficiency, translated from Henry Ford (or was it the meat packers of Chicago?) to anything and everything that can be sold. And the result is everything becomes a commodity and customer and seller are more than isolated, they are total strangers.

But we homo sapiens still need that touch, to be heard, to hear, to band together and support our clan.
Let’s “get back to basics”, let’s go “old school”, let’s be a band of brothers and live our business lives the way we humans are built to live our natural lives.
This is something WE can do. WE can compete. We can succeed.
And not just business success, but personal success within my business. Not millions at a time, but one relationship at a time.

And WE can do it together, with Steve and a new community of thinkers.

About Steve Yastrow and Yastrow & Company

In addition to writing, I spend most of my work time helping companies unleash their potential by creating better connections with their customers. This happens through my speaking events and through Yastrow & Company consulting engagements, where my team and I help companies figure out who they intend to be in the future, and then engage the entire company in creating that future through strong "We" customer relationships.

Before starting Yastrow & Company in the mid-90s I was vice-president of resort marketing for Hyatt Hotels. My experiences in the hotel business showed me clearly that most marketing doesn’t happen in the marketing department. Customers are paying attention to all interactions with a company, not just the promises made in traditional "marketing communications."
